(English)

This is the print which is drawing sunrise at Kanda shrine on new year's day. Kanda shrine was located on the east edge of Hongo tableland. Therefore it was a famous place to see sunrise.

Kanda shrine was originally established in 730 at Ote-machi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. In 1616, Hidetada Tokugawa who was the second shogun of Edo moved it here to protect Edo. Here, Kanda was located at the northeast of Edo castle. Northeast was the direction of the demon's gate in Feng shui.

Now, Kanda shrine is still here. But buildings obstructs to see sunrise.
