The original Ryogokubashi bridge was built in 1659. The reason why building Ryogokubashi bridge was Great Fire of Meireki which was occurred in 1657. All the houses and buildings of Edo was built of wood. So Great Fire of Meireki burned up most of Edo. Edo shogunate made the open space for protection against fire at Ryogoku then Ryogokubashi bridge was hung to escape from fire.

The present bridge was built in 1932 as an earthquake rehabilitation undertaking.

The bridge which is hung at the place meeting Sumidagawa river and Kandagawa river is Yanagibashi bridge. In Edo period, Yanagibashi town was prospered and had many Japanese-style restaurants and shipping agents.

両国橋は、1659年に隅田川に架設された。1657年に発生した明暦の大火は、木造の町であった江戸の殆どを焼き尽くしたが、その教訓から、江戸幕府は、江戸府内の川沿いや山など人家が無いところに火除け地を作った。ここ両国にも火除け地が作られ、大火の際、隅田川の向こう側に避難する為に、両国橋が架けられた。

今の両国橋は、1932年に、震災復興教として作られた。

隅田川と神田川の合流点にある橋は、柳橋だ。江戸時代、ここ柳橋町は大変栄え、神田川沿いに料亭や船宿が立ち並んでいた。
