Edo (Tokyo) is unexpectedly the city which has many slopes. On the slope, there was very beautiful view. I think Hiroshige liked painting slopes. He also painted "Toto Saka Zukushi". "Toto" means "Edo", "Saka" means "slope", "Zukushi" means "fill up". I think Hiroshige liked the wide angle composition. So slope was convenient to paint it.

The print shows Kasumigaseki slope, Daimyo residences, left side was Narihiro Kuroda who was the lord of Fukuoka Domain, right side was Nagamichi Asano who was the lord of Hiroshima Domain, Edo bay and the landmark of Edo, Tsukiji Honganji temple. The people played kites. It was January.

Now, the slope has not been changed. But left side is Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and right side is Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And buildings block us to see Tokyo bay view.

江戸は、意外にも坂の多い街だ。坂上は、非常に良い眺望が広がっていた。広重は坂を描くのが好きだったのだろう。『東都坂尽くし』というシリーズも描いている。広重は、写真で言うところの広角の構図が好きだったのだと思う。坂はもってこいの場所だったはずだ。

さて、この絵は、中央に霞が関坂、左に福岡藩主黒田斉博の屋敷、右に広島藩主浅野長訓の屋敷、江戸湾に、江戸のランドマーク、築地本願寺が描かれている。人々は凧上げに興じていて、正月だ。

今の霞が関坂上だが、福岡藩主黒田斉博の屋敷は国土交通省に、広島藩主浅野長訓の屋敷は外務省に代わっている。ビル群が、東京湾を望むことを阻んでいる。

左上、松平安芸が広島藩主浅野家屋敷、松平美濃が福岡藩主黒田家屋敷。その間の道が霞が関坂。
そのまま右下(南東)に目線をやると築地本願寺が確認できる。
