One Hundred Famous Views of Edo by Hiroshige Utagawa, Spring No. 3 "Hibiya and Soto-Sakurada from Yamashita-chō"

Tricolor, blue of river, red of gate, white of wall of Daimyo mansion* were beautiful. Kites were flying and battledores were shown . It was January.

*The Daimyo mansion was Matsudaira-Hizen-no-kami, the lord of the domain of Saga, Nabeshima family's house.

The view point was the outside of Yamashita gate. Yamashita gate divided Daimyo area and the people area. Hiroshige Utagawa's view was same as the people. The Daimyo mansion symbolized that.

Now, everything has been changed. But we can feel the atmosphere, can't we? The road shown on the center of the photo used be the river, the structure of capital highway can be seen the frame of Yamashita gate. The center window of the photo can be seen Hiroshige's view.

川水の青、大名屋敷*門の赤、塀の白のトリコロールカラーが美しい絵である。凧が揚がり、羽子板も見える。正月である。

*この大名屋敷は、松平肥前守、佐賀藩藩主鍋島家の屋敷

この絵は、山下御門から中に入り、松平肥前守、佐賀藩藩主鍋島家の屋敷に向かって歩いて行き、外堀と内堀を連結する水路が右にクランクする正にその角に立って描かれたものと思う。

今の日生劇場が牧野越中の屋敷に相当し、その石垣が画面右に描かれている。鍋島家の赤門は、丁度、今の日比谷公園の正門とほぼ重なる。(写真の白い建物は日比谷花壇、そのすぐ左に門柱が見える。)

因みに、クランクを曲がって日比谷ご門に続く水路は、日比谷公園の心字池として今もなお同じ場所に残っている。
